Abs Diagnostic
Why would the 'brake light' and my 'ABS light' be on in dash of my 99 Sunfire?
I took the car home after buying it. Put new brakes on all around. It stops like new. But these lights are still on. Would disarming the ABS system leave both lights on? It might be the hand brake switch mal-functioning, I'm not sure where that switch is though. What kind of diagnostic tool would I use to resolve this? It looks like the car had a slight run in with a curb or something at one point.
Most likely a wheel sensor reading is not getting to the ABS controller because of a frayed wire or poor connection.It might help to pull the wheels again and carefully look for some oddness in the wires as they leave the sensor and enter the body.As you suspect it may have been apart or damaged at some point,the quirk probably lies in that area where someone may have made a splice.You can check individual sensors by connecting an ohm meter across their two wires and spinning the wheel.The reading should fluctuate as the wheel turns.

What would cause the dashboard warning lights to come on randomly?
My ABS light has been on for a long time. My headlight light comes on even when my headlights are not broken, the other day my overdrive light was flashing and the check engine light came on. 2 days later they are both off. My car has been running fine so I am thinking that there is something going on with the diagnostic system and the warning lights.. what could this be??

Dont let the last guy work on your car. you have at least three problems right now. abs light on indicates that you have a problem with the abs system that is acting up right now, this should not effect braking (except for your abs will not activate).
I'm not sure which 'headlight' indicator you are talking about, check the owners manual to make sure that your not seeing the "brake light out" indicator
Overdrive light flashing is not a good sign. this is generally caused by a transmission failure of some sort...your check engine light may be related to the transmission code (overdrive light) or you may have some sort of emmisions system failure which may or may not effect engine running. alot of times failures are so minor that you would never notice them, but the engine diagnostic system sees the failures and turns the lights on. if they were minor failures that only occured once the lights will go back off.
without seeing what the codes are, my guess is that you should be saving up for a new transmission (or car). even if you dont notice it now, the computer is saying that there is a problem, and its just a matter of time before you start to notice it too.
your check engine light only flashes if catalyst damage is will occur from continued operation. if it flashes, turn the engine off soon and the cats will be fine
