I'm getting an apartment in a year, but I'm unsure how much to save for house necessities and furniture. HELP!
My girlfriend and I are going to share the apartment and it will be a first for both of us. This means we're starting from scratch furniture-wise and accessory-wise, so we decided it would be smart to start a budget now to buy those things with when the time comes. The problem is that we don't know how much to save. What would be a good way to estimate the amount, or a good way to figure out how much should be saved for later? Any help would be greatly appreciated! =)
You can call local apartment complexs or even the utility companies and ask them for a average rate on costs for whatever size apt. you two plan on getting. They will be more than happy to help you...
Then make sure to ask about water and gas bills, if you pay them or the complex.
You also need to include costs for phone and TV, those you can get off the interent by looking up package deals for whatever companied are in your area..
Food wise, for just the two of you, I would say around $100 - $200 a week. Make sure to add Gas in there, for commuting to work/school.
As for furniture, you can start getting that now, if you have somepalce to store it, by going to garage sales, resale shops, looking in the newspaper or even going to a Furniture Rental place, because most will give you two prices on new furniture sets a rental price and a buy it now price, so you'll know. You can also look in their back rooms for items that they are selling at a huge disocunt because it's an old model or other reasons..
My first apartment - 1 bedroom and I paid $500 a month for rent, $150 total for phone and cable, $130 for electricity and then spent on average $100 week on food.. A good average amount would be to take the rent amount and add at least $500 to it for bills then add on food and gas.
I can almost definitely say he does. -1 was just him being honest and -2 is the reaction ALL guys have.
