Advance Tach
73 240z; backfires through carbs/won't start?
i took the carbs off of my 240z (with '78 280z motor) because a buddy was supposed to come by and help me clean/possibly rebuild them, then re-install and sync them. well he didn't show (don't have his number either) and so i decided to just put them back on. well i think they are hooked properly, only bad thing is that it wouldn't start! vacum advance was to blame for this, so i hooked it up and wham!! it fired up............ and ran at like 4000 rpm in park (no tach; judging by ear). so i shut if off... tried again this morning and she won't start but will backfire through the intake. i unscrew the damper rods from the carbs and smoke travels up from within. any ideas what i need to do?
i will post on the z car forums if i don't get many good responses here first.
Throttles on both carburetors turning choke cables are working fuel hoses not dripping by moving those carbs you may have dislodged rust and debris in the bottom of float chambers. Some Friend Hey. Unbolt the air filter assembly look down the throttle bores reach in with your finger lift up on the dash pot make sure they move smoothly. Look at the throttle butterfly's. Back fire from the carbs almost always means the car is to lean. STOP don't drive till you get a Book and learn how to work on one of the easiest carburetor to rebuild clean and overhaul. But make sure you have the complete overhaul kits and always replace any old cracked fuel lines and if you find rubber bits in those float chambers also replace the fuel pump. (diaphragm may be coming apart). You should have left those parts sitting on the work bench. Library may have books on SU carbs. Over haul kits may have instructions. Float drop and float height is very important as is main jet height and needle wear. You need to find a old guy who remembers SU carburetors either MG Triumph or Datsun GOOD LUCK GET ER DONE

Positive wire on a Tach?
I just bought an after market tachometer and I was going through the instructions and was wondering what the positive wire is used for in the tach. I'd just like to know would this positive wire drain a lot of power? Can I hook it up to a wire that is already running a headlight (1 head light) 2 small fog lights some tail lights and neon lights? or would also adding a tach to the same wire put too much stress on it? thanks in advance.
the tach needs power to work. look at the instructions,, as my VDO has 2 power wires,, one for constant +12 V, hooks to batt terminal on fuse box, and one for operation, I hook this one up to the Accessories lead. If your tach has only one lead, hook it up to an power wire that is only active when to engine is running,, ie, when the ignition switch is in on or acc position,, and off when cranking. that'll do it. don't forget to hook up the tach pulse wire.
