Alternator Tester
anyone up for a possessed car problem?
situation:
1998 chevy astro.
it starts when it feels like
every once in a while you turn the key, dead, dead as a door nail.
most of the time, it starts fine, but weak.
this is due to low voltage
its at 9 volts on the tester
which just barley starts it.
brand new battery, alternator checks out.
also, door chimes sound at random times while driving
checked door switches, its not the doors.
also, the door chime does not always sound when the door IS open.
any idea would be appreciated.
If you just replaced battery, and it still does this, (I'm assuming you jump it to get it going when it doesn't crank) you may have a slow battery drain. If you've had any major repair work done recently, I'd have the ignition switch checked to make sure it's timed correctly. If it's not, it can cause the accessory to stay on or other components to draw a current and drain the battery.
Your local Chevy dealership has all the correct diagnostic and reprogram equipment, but call around to other places and price check (chevy diagnostic fees can be killers.)

What's wrong with my car? Battery, Alternator, Computer?
I was driving to work one day and stopped at a stop sign. My car started freaking out (the radio went nuts and the instrument lights started flashing). I took off and everything went back to normal except for a couple of lights staying on. I shut the car off at the next stop sign and it wouldn't start back up. We checked the battery and it tested bad, then we checked the alternator (jumped the car then put on the tester) and it was in the OK operating range with high beams and high blower on. Turned the car off again and it wouldn't start. Now it has started two times without changing the battery.
It's a 2001 Chevy Cavalier 2.0L 4cyl, btw.
If the battery tested bad and the alternator tested fine - I don't see the problem - replace the battery.
