Anyone know of a lightweight, powered speaker system good for DJing?

***I was using this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Kustom-Profile-One-PA-System-with-Roller-Bag-103389508-i1153433.gc

Came with a roller-suitcase and everything was pretty lightweight. ***However it only had 100 watt power.

***Now I need a system of about 500 watts or so. But I don't want to go over $1000.

Any suggestions?

More power = more $.

Mackie powered speakers are best - but may not fit your $.

Kustom Hardtop Head

Kustom Hardtop Head

$899.99

Kustom Hardtop Head Kustom Amplification expands on the success of its all-tube Coupe Series guitar amplifiers with the introduction of the '72 Coupe Hardtop, a new amp with the award-winning tone, features and distinctive "tuck n' roll" look of the company's '72 Coupe combo models, but in a head format. The Hardtop, which is built in the USA using U.S. and imported parts, is an all-tube, '72 w head designed by Kustom's Chief Engineer, James Brown. Using four 6L6 output tubes and four 12AX7 preamp tubes from Electro-Harmonix, the Hardtop is a two-channel, Dual Master Volume design that lets players get sweet, harmonically rich distortion from either channel at any volume level. For increased flexibility, there is a footswitchable Master Volume Boost that works for both channels, and can be dialed in for a preset boost of up to 10dB - perfect for making solos stand out in the mix. Drawing on classic, vintage Kustom circuits from the 1960s and '70s, the '72 Coupe Hardtop provides a lush Accutronics spring Reverb with its own tone control and Kustom's original Tremolo and Vibrato circuits that can be set from very slow to fast speeds, enabling everything from throbbing tremolo to dramatic rotary speaker effects. The amplifier's EQ controls (Bass, Middle, Treble) were also adapted from vintage Kustom circuits. Rear panel controls include a tube-driven Effects Loop and a highly effective speaker-emulated Direct Out with a volume control. The Direct Out provides a robust, ballsy signal for mixing boards at live gigs or in the recording studio, thereby eliminating the need for microphones. Speaker output jacks and an impedance selector switch are also located on the head's back panel. Kustom Coupe 412A

Kustom Coupe 412A

$999.99

Kustom Coupe 412A Kustom Coupe™ 412 A/B guitar speaker cabinets take the classic 4x12 concept and elevate it to a new artform. The top, bottom and two sides of a Coupe 412 speaker cabinet are all cut from a single sheet of virtually void-free Baltic Birch plywood, recognized for its rich, "woody" tonal qualities. Kustom has found that cutting the cabinet's entire 15mm frame from a single sheet of birch enhances the overall resonance because each piece has similar structural characteristics and density patterns. Accordingly, the individual pieces of wood resonate together, creating stronger fundamental tones with naturally enhanced harmonics. Furthermore, using modern CNC machines that are Computer Indexed results in incredible accuracy when cutting the wood. Once assembled, the pieces fit together perfectly, with tighter glue joints, for increased strength. Taking this concept even further, a Straight-front Coupe 412 cabinet features a one-piece Baltic Birch Baffle Board. The Baffle itself is thinner than the cabinet's shell, measuring 12mm in thickness. Testing at Kustom has shown that a somewhat thinner Baffle contributes desireable resonance to the overall sound, creating more lively, less rigid, tonal qualities. Naturally, the Coupe 412 with the classic Slant front is built from two pieces of virtually void-free Baltic Birch, as is necessary with the Slant-type design. Again, thickness is 12mm for responsive performance. Coupe 412 speaker cabinets all use 12-inch Celestion® Vintage 30™ speakers, a favorite of professional guitarists around the world. These premium speakers deliver rich, full-bodied tone with great definition and sustain - you'll quickly hear why they have earned a reputation for excellence. Overall power handling is rated at 240 watts. Coupe 412 cabinets are wired for Mono or Stereo operation which is selectable using a switch on the back of the cabinet. When using a cabinet in the traditional Mono mode, the four speakers are rated at 16 Ohms. In Stereo mode, two speakers function for the Left side and two speakers function for the Right side with a total impedance of 8 Ohms per side. Visually, Coupe 412 cabinets are stunning. Total boutique quality. And rightly so, as they are handcrafted at the Kustom Shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. Beautiful, high-quality coverings, Vintage Black Weave Grill Cloth, removeable, vintage-style castors, and rugged handles complete the package. Truly a classic piece that can compete with any speaker cabinet ever built. Kustom Double Cross

Kustom Double Cross

$1699.99

Kustom Double Cross Expanding its U.S. tube amplifier line, Kustom™ proudly introduces the Double Cross™, a world-class, all-tube, 3-channel guitar head. Designed by noted amp builder James Brown, the 100-watt Double Cross boldly redefines high-gain guitar amplification with a broad spectrum of stunning new tones and user-modified features. The Double Cross amp head has three distinctively voiced channels: Rhythm, Lead I and Lead II. Each Lead channel can be modified by users via four separate function switches which are located at the four end points of a cross design on the control panel. These switches are not simply EQ parameters; each uniquely blends additional 12AX7 tube stages, letting players actually alter the Gain/EQ/Attack structure of their preamps modifications usually not offered to consumers unless they take their amplifier to a knowledgeable technician to be permanently "modded." The two Lead channels are voiced differently, with Lead I catering to a modern, heavy tone and Lead II crafted for a more traditional, high-gain "cranked amp" lead tone. The four switches on each Cross are: (1) Bright: alters the tone to enhance high-end response and tighten the low-end (2) Gain: boosts the preamp gain (3) Tight Stage: adds chunky, vintage-style gain like a classic amp when fully cranked (4) Thick Stage: offers rich, aggressive tonal qualities with complex harmonic content. These four functions may be activated, omitted and blended in any combination to create a fantastically wide choice of tones. Adding more gain usually causes so much compression that you lose dynamics and note definition. Although the Double Cross offers tremendous amounts of gain and distortion, it adds the extra tubes in a way that doesn't change your dynamics or sacrifice the touch sensitivity, regardless of the amp's settings. All three channels of the Double Cross provide separate Gain & Volume controls a standard Kustom feature as well as independent Bass, Middle, Treble and Presence controls. There is also a global Master Volume and a Boost Volume control that can be activated with the Double Cross's 5-function metal footswitch (included). A speaker cabinet-emulated Direct Out, drawn from Kustom's Coupe 1/2 Series amplifiers, has evolved to offer two signal options: (1) the tonal coloration provided by a Slant-style 4x12 cabinet or (2) The distinct sound of a straight-style 4x12. The rich, punchy tone of Kustom's D.I. signal is revered by professional musicians and is now even better. Special features include an all-tube, footswitchable effects loop, a 6L5 / #EL34 bias switch for changing output tube types, a Tight input jack that tightens the attack response of the entire amplifier, and a 5-function footswitch that activates each channel, the Boost function, and the effects loop. Kustom Deep End 300HD

Kustom Deep End 300HD

$299.99

Kustom Deep End 300HD The Deep End® DE300HD bass head combines classic, punchy tube amp tones and touch with the robust articulation of solid-state power amp design. Utilizing a 12AX7 preamp in tandem with a Tube Gain control, players can drive the tube preamp to elicit natural tube overload in varying degrees. From funky clean to mean and aggressive, the Deep End tube preamp has it covered. What is Organic Clipping™? The DE300HD delivers 300 watts (RMS) of defined, articulate power. And when cranked up, its exclusive Organic Clipping™ power amp circuit reacts like an all-tube amp, generating lower order, musical harmonics and natural clipping characteristics just like the best all-tube designs. It's the classic power amp "growl" that bass players know and love, with a smooth transition from clean to grind. Another benefit of the Organic Clipping™ circuit is that a power amp limiter is no longer needed. Many amp builders use heavy power amp limiting to prevent unpleasant distortion characteristics typically generated when solid-state circuits are pushed hard. Organic Clipping™ makes limiting unnecessary because when the amp is cranked up, it overloads with the same tonality as a tube amp. There is also more usable volume on tap, so you can get louder while pushing the amp further into distortion. What is Room EQ? In addition to a classic, passive tone stack consisting of Bass, Mid and Treble controls, the DE300HD features an innovative new approach to solving EQ issues quickly and effectively. Called Room EQ, it consists of Low Contour and High Contour controls, each solving the most common tonal problems that bassists encounter when performing. For example, the High Contour control can reduce ear-fatiguing treble peaks that often occur when a room or venue has hard reflections or be used to reduce treble presence or "sizzle" when required. Low Contour can be used to provide low-end definition in a large, boomy room or function as a shelving control when pronounced low-end cuts are needed. Using both Room EQ controls, players can dial in the EQ structure that works most effectively in any given performance environment. Not suffering from emulation frustration? To make life easier both on stage and in the studio, the DE300HD offers a balanced Direct Out with Speaker Emulation. This output was painstakingly engineered to actually sound like a Deep End amplifier as heard by a bass player standing directly in front of the amp, capturing the unique tonality of the amplifier/speaker combination. Your soundman will thank you. Other DE300HD conveniences include a Tuner Out, Effects Loop Send and Return jacks, and Power Amp In and Preamp Out jacks. Kustom Defender 112 Guitar Combo Amp

Kustom Defender 112 Guitar Combo Amp

$449.95

Kustom ushers in a new era in guitar amplification with The Defender, an EL-34 or 6L6-powered, 50-watt tube combo amp that provides an intoxicating blend of smoking tones and special, boutique-style features. To maximize the amp’s classic tone, The Defender is built of solid Pine and utilizes a Plywood Baffle Board. All-Pine construction gives the amplifier a rich, resonant tone that will inspire any lover of historic tube amps. The cabinet is covered in high-quality black Tolex with a raised stitching pattern, similar to a motorcycle seat. Kustom Defender 112 Guitar Combo Amp Features: Two EL34 output tubes Three 12AX7 preamp tubes 12-inch Kustom speaker  A Bright switch that provides either a fuller, American-style bass response or a tighter, British flavored low-end A player’s preference of either EL34 or 6L6 power tubes may be used in The Defender, thanks to a switch which adjusts the amp’s bias circuitry accordingly – perfect for guitarists who like to experiment with their tonal options Duo-Mod Preamp Another important element of The Defender’s special tone is an exclusive preamp that operates unlike any other on the market. Called Duo-Mod, the proprietary Kustom circuit utilizes traditional Volume and Master Volume controls, but that’s where the similarity ends. Here’s how it works: When turning the Volume control down to get cleaner tones, the Duo-Mod circuit progressively reduces gain in multiple locations throughout the preamp, unlike competitive amplifiers. The result is stunning clarity throughout the Gain control’s entire range. In other words, clean tones get cleaner and medium-gain tones stay chunkier and dynamic, while not sacrificing their higher-gain potential. In the medium-to-high gain ranges, the Kustom Duo-Mod circuit progressively adds gain in multiple locations throughout the preamp. The result is smoking hot rock tones with punch and clarity that set it apart from the competition. In essence, the Kustom Duo-Mod circuit produces a wide variety of tones from a deceptively simple one-channel amplifier without the need for additional gain switches or controls. Another First The Defender’s Master Volume doesn’t merely control the overall amplifier level. It also optimizes the amp’s overall EQ to produce perfectly tweaked tonal results no matter how the input Volume and Master Volume controls are set. For example, when the input Volume is cranked for distortion and the Master is set lower, the amp’s midrange and high-end are adjusted to eliminate any harshness. This system lets players make large changes in gain settings with minimal adjustments of tone controls. For added flexibility, there is also a Master Volume Bypass switch, which lets players entirely disable the Master from the circuit to achieve the penetrating tone and headroom of vintage, non-Master type amplifiers. It’s perfect for players who like to use outboard overdrive and distortion boxes to spice up their sound. For even more power a

How To Find The Right Guitar Amp

Choosing the right amplifier for your guitar is by no means an easy task.  Usually a guitarist will think of style, as well as price first, when considering options.  Assuming you have bought a guitar recently, this guide will suggest a few tips, for buying a new or used amplifier.  There are dozens on the market – with low to "sky's the limit" prices.  Assuming that you are a beginning or aspiring guitarist, this guide should give you some guidance.  Perhaps you have just bought a Fender, Epiphone, Gibson, Dean, Ibanez, Kramer or other guitar, of fairly good to good quality, you will need a good amp to compliment your style.

One cannot think of a guitarist performing live, without thinking about their guitar to some extent.  Visualizing Jimi Hendrix's "Stratocaster" with a wall of amplifiers behind him, — yes the much emulated and desired Marshall Stacks, which are quite expensive.  Eric Clapton, in his early years, preferred Marshalls as well, though he did also prefer to play a Les Paul, or his legendary "The Fool" SG, before he switched over to a Stratocaster as well.  Speaking of "The Fool's" current owner, Todd Rundgren, who prefers an old Fender Mustang, is known to like the crispness of Peavey amplifiers.  I have owned several Peavey amplifiers, including a P.A. and must admit, they are really hard to beat for clarity of sound.  I also owned a Marshall Stack 100 Watts at one time, and attribute much hearing loss from it.  Honestly, I think the same classic sound, with less decibels can be achieved, through smaller amps.

Really you must ask yourself, in relation to the guitar you have, what kind of sound are you wishing to project?  Will this be acoustic?  Straight ahead Rock and Roll?  Country?  Blues?  Heavy Metal?

What kind of budget are you on?  If you are like me, I would rather start with a smaller amplifier to get a feel, for how I like the sound and how it sounds with the guitar.

SOLID STATE VS. TUBE AMPLIFIERS

There are many guitar purists who swear by tube amplifiers over solid state.  They want that warm crunch or presence of vintage tube analog sound.  The cost of a vintage amplifier is expensive.  One can also emulate or simulate the sound of a tube amplifier, from effects pedals, such as Ibanez Tube Screamer, which is quite popular, for this purpose.  Behringer and Peavey have smaller amps which sound fairly good, with trans-tube technology, in relation to the vintage Fenders, Vox, and Marshalls.  But for our purposes, we shall focus on solid state amplifiers due to cost for the beginner, versatility, and the simple fact, that digitally the sound can be reproduced, to an extent, only a professional would notice.

$100 Budget

Let us assume that you have $100 to spend on an amplifier at this time.  Note, you can always add effects pedals.  In addition, due to digital technology, you can also purchase pedals which will simulate all the classic and vintage amplifiers.

There are inexpensive practice amplifiers out there ranging from $30-80, but it would be safe to say, that the bedroom, backstage or den is the only context you will be able to use them in.  Usually they are about 10 Watts of power, although good in tone, you may want to consider something that can be used in other atmospheres, such as jamming along with friends, or even having enough power for small clubs, or coffeehouses.  Among those smaller amps for practice:

Rogue, Peavey Audition, Rocktron, Ibanez, Behringer V Tone, Kustom, Fender Frontman 15G

Behringer Ultracoustic, Pignose, even a 10 Watt Marshall

These amplifiers may be what you are seeking if you are considering to mic them through a P.A. System, or you really just want an amplifier, to jam along with songs in the comfort of your bedroom, but it is best to consider amps starting in the 15 watt range and going up from there.

By the way, don't feel embarrassed by the use of pedals and effects you will find that most guitarists use them.

Lastly, you may want to get a custom handmade amp built for you by someone like Jack at jacksaxe.com. Custom amps have the advantage of being built to your desires and needs.

Whatever you do, make sure that you have done your research before buying an amp. You will be glad you did.
