Applied Concepts Dual
SATA power connection to SATA drive question?
I recently purchased a new ASUS SATA Dual-Layer DVD burner for my new rig. I currently have 2 SATA hard drives in the system. What I wanted to know was, when it comes to the SATA power connections, do I need to designate 1 cable to the hard drives and 1 cable to the DVD burner like I would have to do if I was using all IDE connections? From what I understand with IDE, one cable must have only hard drives connected because the DVD drive and the hard drives are accessed at different times, and having them on once cable together would make the performance of the hard drives suffer, especially when I would be using the burner. Does this concept apply to SATA technology as well? I've heard that it doesn't because the SATA drives have their own controllers. But can somebody clarify this and help me to finally solve this question I've had?
SATA drives run off one cable per device whick are all independant of eachother, the only limit of speed is your FSB (front side bus) which only had a maximum bandwith. only so much data can be handled at one time before it all starts lagging.
the configuring of IDE HDD's and Burners on same cable is okay aslong as your not expecting to copy/burn from one drive to the other on the SAME cable, it will work but it'l need to go for example: read drive 1 to cpu, write to from drive 2 and so on, but if they are on different cables the data can constantly travel one way eg: a constant read from drive 1 through cpu to constant write to drive 2.
The CPU isnt responsible but i think its the Southbridge chipset.
