Transmission Range Sensor-How do you change?
2000 Ford Contour SE. 4 cylinder front wheel drive.
I was on the freeway going about 65-70 mph. then the transmission started shifting on its own - when it wants. I had to stay around 60 to keep it from doing that then later it started shifting on the street. The engine light came on and Auto Zone ID'ed the problem as a defective transmission range sensor with the scanner... they do not sell it, they said I have to get it from a ford dealer (expensive?)...where is this part located? in or outside of the transmission? Do i need any special tools to replace it? I would like to know if this is hard to do
at home or do i have get it done at a transmission shop? Also how serious of a problem is this?
If you drive a few days with this bad what could happen?
The first step is to check the level and condition of your trans fluid as per your owners manual.
Is the fluid bright red and clear or dark? Does it smell burnt?
The trans. range sensor, a.k.a. the manual lever position sensor is located on the outside top of your transmission where the shift cable attaches. It is fairly easy to change, only a couple of bolts and on wiring connector.
But, before you just buy one and change it, it would greatly benefit you to have a mechanic check the car electronically. Auto-zone only has a scanner to read stored trouble codes. A shop will have the capability to read what is known as the data-stream in real time to find out what is really going on.
Your problem is not a common symptom for a faulty MLP. You also have shift solenoids internal in the trans that could cause the problem, and also there is a chance that it is an internal mechanical problem.
The cause could also be an indicator of another problem elsewhere, ie, engine electrical, or even a poor ground.

it should be on the side of the transmission or on top, when you buy the new part you'll know exactly where it is,and it shouldn't be that hard to replace.
