Making every member of the family feel safe indoors is perhaps one of the most pressuring tasks for any homeowner. There should be one phone for areas such as the kitchen, living room and the hall. Orient everyone as to which passage is safest to go. Map out every possible route. Installing devices

There are four main types of fire extinguishers for home use. These are water, aqueous film forming foam, dry powder or ABC powder and carbon dioxide. But since some households are already exploring professional kitchen equipment like deep fryers, there are now wet chemical fire extinguishers suitable for domestic use. Each type has specific usage depending on the cause of fire:
- Water – Type A (for wood, paper, textiles and fabric)
- AFF Foam – Types A and B (oils, diesel, petroleum)
- Carbon dioxide – Types B and for electrical equipment
- Dry powder – Types A, B, C (butane, methane, propane) and electrical equipment
- Wet chemical – Types A and F (cooking oils, fats)
Safeguard your kitchen
A huge percentage of fires start in the kitchen. Thus, responsible usage of this area is important to fire safety. Do not leave open fire unattended even for a few minutes. Avoid wearing clothes with long sleeves when cooking as such material can easily catch fire. Make sure to wear protective gear such as potholders, oven mitts and place dishcloth or counter towels nearby. However, do not place them very near the hot surfaces. If a small fire occurs, immediately remove food from the heat and/or unplug any appliance.
Monitoring electrical wiring, devices and appliances
Frequently check if there are any exposed wires. In line with this, make sure that you do not have rodents at home as these can chew up wires. Refrain from using octopus extension cords. Plug in only one or two appliances per socket. And always turn off all electrical devices once no one is present at home. Do not charge devices unsupervised. Teaching and preparing your family on how to be safe can never be too early. With these simple preventive measures, you are minimizing the risks of jeopardizing the safety of your family. Being victimized and traumatized by a fire is at least a notch down further from happening.
