Band Voice Who should I model my voice on in my band?
I've got a band, which is going to be a pop-punk mostly, sometimes with some rock. Who should I model my voice on from rock and pop-punk bands? Thanks.
I would recommend learning the lyrics and singing along with songs you like. When you develop your own style, it will be combination of all the singers you admire.
An important part of this however, is trying not to exactly mimic another singer's style. Its ok to pick up things you like here and there, but you never want to go too far with it. For one, everyone's anatomy is different, there's a lot of things resonating to make a person's unique vocal tone. If you try too hard to mimic someone else you are going to be doing things that are not natural for your own anatomy, and it will usually sound stupid and often out of tune.
The best thing to do is make sure you're matching the pitch correctly (using your own natural singing voice). Vocal exercises and lessons will help with this tremendously. Look on youtube for some ideas. Having an instrument around helps with this as well like a piano, keyboard or guitar, where you can play the correct pitches from the song on it and then match it with your voice.
Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out what pitches are being sung, especially with music that has an agressive vocal style. Avoid all out yelling or anything that strains your voice. A lot of what you hear on recording may sound like the singer is screaming when they are actually using a controlled style, usually helped out quite a bit with effects like distortion.

I know there are versions out there for just voice and piano, if you can't find anything else. Try the JWPepper or SheetMusicPlus websites to find sheet music.
