Belt Cutter
I'm a vegetarian, is my employer allowed to make me wear a leather belt?
I don't buy leather. I don't wear leather. I would be less adverse to wearing it at work, if they were to buy it, but I really don't want to. The smell of leather makes me sick. Also I refuse to support that industry.
I could buy a cloth belt, but it would look rediculous. And it's not like I need a belt. its just a one of those everyone has to look the same cookie cutter type input/ output.
Im not one of those in your face, IM A VEGETARIAN, type people. My philosophy is... You eat meat, thats fine. I don't, get over it. And I have been a vegetarian for 11 years now, so it's not like I'm a fly by night; no-meat-today.... mmmmm cow tomorrow.
Not to mention that I also wont eat at work, because people harass me for not eating meat. Or they tease me for what i do eat... which mostly at work is a peanut- butter sandwich (mmm protien)
I just want to know what kind of rights do I have as a Vegetarian... cuz its not a choice-its a way of life.

If the employer has a legitimate reason for a leather belt i.e. part of a uniform, and the uniform is a condtion of employment, and all others are wearing the uniform etc., etc. then you would likely have to wear it. If he allows your accommodation of a cloth belt but you refuse to wear it because it looks ridiculous ... well that's your problem since you are unwilling to compromise.
Your "rights" do not extend to flaunting the terms of employment which you likely knew upfront before you went to work for them. If the job requires a uniform... that is a reasonalbe condition of employment. The bottom line is you either wear the uniform or they can fire you.
I think what is going to happen son is you are going to push this "vegetarian rights" thing and they are going to push you right out of a job. Unable to deal with the "teasing" and standing apart from the crowd is going to get you noticed as an "oddball" . . . if it hasn't done so already, and they dont' last long. Good luck.
