Belt Holders
Why does boxing have such a mixed up alphabet soup of belt-holders, and no clear champions?
17 weight classes, should mean 17 champions, one for each class, right?

In a perfect world, this is the way it would (should) be.
The reason for the alphabet champions is MONEY. The different sanctioning bodies can ordain their own champion and call their fights championships. More title fights, more money for everybody..even if the so called title holder is a joke.
This is why boxing needs a national commission with a commissioner of boxing to regulate the sport. Under a central commission, there WOULD be only one champion in each division, rules and rankings would be standardized, mismatches and setup fights would be stopped and retired fighters would be taken care of.
As long as there are competing governing bodies in boxing, the sport will continue to dwindle in popularity.

Where can I find the science behind the wooden, comma shaped "belt holder"? It will balance on your finger?
Looks like a comma, but when you put a belt in it, with the ends hanging lower than the block it will balance on its very thin edge.
I know that it has some practical application, but have forgotten what.
I had one when I was a kid, and have recently found one for my kids, but would like to share with them the practical stuff too.
It's because the center of gravity lies beneath the point of support (your finger). That makes it essentially act like a pendulum, in the sense that, if you rock the device a little so the center of gravity is moved slightly to the side, gravity tends to restore the center of gravity back to the "under the support" position. (In terms of physics, if you rock the device slightly in the clockwise direction, gravity produces an opposing, counterclockwise torque (and vice-versa), restoring equilibrium).
