Bmw Service Inspection

how do I reset the service light on a 1991 BMW 318is?
I know that the oil level is fine, the service light is what's bugging me. It either shows "Inspection" most of the time or it will flash to "oil service" with a red and yellow light. is there a way to reset, without having to take it to a mechanic?
gotta touch two of the ports/with open wire /cant remember/anyway see if you can google it/i used a jumper wire and held it and watched them reset

Service for a BMW 5 series?
Hi, I have a BMW 5 series 2001 model (E39) and the Service light came on about 1,000 miles ago (Inspection One). I am about to go on a car trip to Europe and travel abotu 2,500 miles - do you think I should get the service done before the travel or wait until I return back? Any technical advice as to why would be most appreciated. Spoke to the dealer and they obviously said that I should do in advance - they prob just want the money. Any advice from BMW owners or car mechanics most appreciated - or anyone who has done this before! Thanks!!!!!!!!
Hi Batman,
If you are someone who looks after their car, keeps it maintained and expects reliability from it then the simple answer is yes you should get it done.
I'm sure the dealer will always welcome custom from anybody, however they have a responsibilty to offer the correct advice as set by BMW. I have never understood this "all dealers are a rip off" mentality.
BMW spend millions (and I mean millions) on developing their cars to be as reliable and as service free as possible (They strive for longer service intervals all the time). With a new 3 series now it is possible to reach 19,000 + miles before a service is required.
A new 3 series twenty years ago would need a visit before half of that was up.
My point being that when the green service lights expire then a certain amount of aging and use has occurred in your engine that has been calculated in the development stages.
In addition to that, wouldn't it be nice to have peace of mind that your car is in good shape before such a long trip ?
Good Luck, Pyth

Love the thumb downs, shame there are so many bitter people on here conflicting with sensible advice simply out of spite.
My advice Batman, listen to people like Martin B above. He speaks a lot of sense.
Either way, whatever you choose enjoy your trip ![]()

Check with the Ca DMV for details.
To drive in TX you need registatration( about $70) and inspection($39) and insurance( $XXX)..
There was a part where you could drive in another state with expired reg and insp.
EVERYONE check with Your state.
