Chain Holder
How can I approach companies about placing a donation box or ad for a non-profit org in their business?
Hi, I am part of a startup non-profit organization and would like to know if anyone here has had experience or has the knowledge to help me approach a company to have either a donation box or a brochure holder w/business cards at their business.
Small businesses tend to be relatively easy when speaking to the owner directly, but larger businesses especially chains tend to be incredibly difficult to approach. Any advice will be appreciated, thank you!
Just ask! Most businesses want to be viewed as part of their community. They want to help IF they know the value. It's your job to show them the value. Remember these tips -
1. Arrive at a time that is most convenient for the business (not during rush hours)
2. Clearly identify yourself "I'm with XYZ.
3. State the benefit you provide in terms of the community making sure that you are not personally benefiting. We help ______ with _______"
4. Small independents are better than major chains. The chains either have policies against such or require that you submit a form, much in advance etc. On the other hand, the chains often have a place where you can put announcements up (say on a bulletin board), With chains the important thing is leaving plenty of time (3 months) and finding the right person.
5. Make sure you are speaking to the right person ("Who in your store would handle something like this")
6. Be clear when you will return -- so that the merchant does not have to be concerned that the box will be left there forever. "I'd like to leave this here over the weekend. . . . this week, etc."
7. If there is any direct incentive tell them. Examples: "We will be letting all of our members know who are merchant partners are in our newsletter. It goes out to about 500 people" "We will be glad to include your name as a sponsor in the program, etc."

How can I reface a corner brick fireplace?!?!?
Were trying to update our 50's duplex and in our rectangular living room sits a corner fireplace made from brick with a solid plain stained wood mantle. There is a brass screen holder with chain style drapes to protect the fire. What's the best and cheapest way to bring this ugly fireplace up to date? Can I mortar and tile right over the brick? Thank you!!! =D
With all due respect to you and my peers here, I can't imagine Brick ever going out of style, but I'd probably do concrete backer board over, then Tile it, if tile is your choice. The effort might, in the long term, be more satisfactory.
