how to clean a shotgun barrel?
I need to know how to clean the inside of my shotgun barrel. i am new to shotguns and want to make sure i get things right before i try. I have a cleaning kit but i need to know what to use and if there is any kind of a solvent i should use.

the kit should have 2 bottles, one for oil and one for solvent. The solvent is to disolve and remove old gunpowder and lead. The solvent included should be just fine, but when that runs out just buy some Hoppes #9
if at all possible clean from the breech to the muzzle. You may need to disassemble a little. Otherwise I sometimes cheat and stick a wadded up rag in the open chamber to keep any gung from the barrel getting in the chamber and just clean from the muzzle of my pump, but it is not the best.
assemble your rod.
Put some solvent on a patch. Make sure to use a patch that is tight enough it fits snuggly in the gun. Use the rod to push the wet patch through the barrel. Do not put it on the slotted tip, some folks like those but to me that just draggs the dirty rag back up through the barrel, just let it fall out the barrel.
Wait about 5 minutes so the solvent has time to work. Now push a dry patch down the barrel. Sometimes if that patch is really dirty I push a second dry patch down. After one or two dry patches, run another wet patch down, and then some more dry patches. Repeat this step a few times. If the gun is exceptionally dirty, let the gun sit longer after you push a wet patch through, or push the wire brush through after you run the wet pach (not all kits contain the wire brush)
when you have gotten the barrel sufficeintly clean, say, 5 times doing the wet patch/dry patch (I don't think shotgun barrels need to be immaculate, after all one shot and it is dirty again) put some oil on a rag, not a lot so it is dripping off, just a little. Rub the oil on the metal of the barrel, receiver, magtube, whatever, and on the wood as well. You want a nice thin coat of oil to repell any water and prevent rust. Don't touch the metal after you wipe it down with oil, just carry it by the stock when you go to put it away.
also, another thing that I do quite different from Randy C
depending on the material of the brush, dipping the brush directly into the solvent will reduce the potency of the solvent over time, as little bits of the brush will be left behind and the solvent will totally disolve them, leaving less room per drop to remove the fouling in the barrel when you use the solvent later. I normally bursh after I have soaked the barrel with a wet patch, but if I do want solvent on the brush I pour a little in the lid while holding the brush in the stream, or roll the brush in a small puddle in the lid.

What do i need to clean a gun?
I want to get the 72 piece universal gun cleaning kit but it doesnt come with any spray or anything. I want to clean shotguns rifles and pistols. What do i need to clean each besides the brushes and rods and stuff. Any good names you always use? where can i get it? How much? How doi do it? I dont know i'm new to the sport

you need at least a basic solvent...Hoppes 9 has be a standard for years.
... Gun oil can be anyting from light petrolium oil to dry graphite or other high tech modern products.
I keep Remoil and CLP Breakfree on the bench all the time. Some action wear points need heavier viscosity lubricants... I like the Mil spec red grease from the US military... wheel bearing grease or lithium grease can be used for some applications too.
Mobil One synthetic oil (motor oil) is useful ... i used it in several 45 autos that I shot in competition... mostly on the slide rails. It works very well for duty weapons carried in very cold weather too... doesnt stiffen up as some oils may in sub-zero climates
If you shoot a lot there is a homebrewed solvent-cleaner that works wonders... folks call it "Ed's Red" and it is equal parts of Dextron Transmission fluid, Kerosene, Acetone and mineral sprits... you can delete the acetone... but only use it in well ventalated areas and avoid open flames when it's in use.
I keep some of those blue paper towels around all the time... and Q tips come in real handy for gun cleaning tasks
