How do I increase the efficiency of an electromagnet?
I have made an electromagnet with my son as a project. I want to know how to make it as efficient as it can be but i can't find much info on how to improve it. Right now, it uses a single layer of tightly wound 24 gauge coated electromagnetic wire around a metal core (rougly 1/2 inch diameter). Here are some of my questions...
1. if i add another layer of coil how do i do it (when i get to the end do i just turn back again - or is the direction important)? Will additional layers help?
2. i relized if i increase the voltage, it gets stronger - how do i know what the max voltage is without the battery or coil getting hot? (using 9 volt, and 24 gauge wire)
3. does the thickness and material of the core make a difference?
You don't really want more efficiency, you want stronger magnet, right? Two are somewhat related, but higher strength suggestions:
1. Best way is to add more wire. Just add more wire at the end is the best, but u could also put a new winding over the top also powered by the same battery. The winding direction is critical - must stay clockwise or counterclockwise - but everyone goes up and down the core when winding like on a spool of thread - no problem with that. Field is proportional to amp-turns, and current will decrease as you add more windings, so will also need higher voltage.
2. You can easily calculate the heat generated (power = E * I, E = IR), but modeling the cooling is hard. Just crank up the voltage gradually and double check with your hand to make sure it is not getting too hard. Heat goes with I^2 R, so longer wire + higher voltage = more magnet with less heat.
3. material yes, you could get some with higher permeability. Availability may be a problem. Google magnetic permeability. Maybe get a core from a junk solenoid. I don't think core geometry matters much - you will have all lines of flux going through the core anyway.
