Cobra Ultra How do i get better signal with a cb antenna?
I was wondering how to get better signal from my cb antenna, i have a 102" whip, and it don't pick up that good. Also i only have a cobra 19 ultra 3 radio ( i was on a budget). Can anyone help me out? And i heard that the whips are the best mobile antennas, is this true? I'll Appreciate any advice thanks
Except for antennas that are an electrical 1/2 wave design, a 102" whip should be one of the best antennas around. I take it that this is a mobile installation. The 102" whip requires the spring, it's part of the antenna. It should be vertical. It should be mounted on metal. The more it's surrounded by metal, the better. This is because the metal is half of the antenna. Ideally, the entire antenna should be vertical and the metal ground plane should be horizontal and should be a radius of 104" in all directions. Vehicles seldom provide this though.
You say it doesn't receive well. How have you determined this? Test the antenna with an SWR meter. A low reading (1.1:1 to 1.5:1) would indicate a good match with the radio. A high reading (2:1 or higher) indicates a problem. Since you are using a simple whip antenna, you can use a VOM (volt-ohm-milliamp) or DMM (digital multi-meter) to test it. At the CB connection, you should have zero ohms resistance between the center conductor and the whip and again between the outside (screw) connection and the vehicle ground. You should have infinite resistance between the center conductor and outside conductor, as well as vehicle ground.

Avon AV72 Cobra Rear Tire With its unique snakeskin sidewalls, an aggressive tread pattern and low noise emission the Cobra silently defeats all roads that stand in its path. Advanced manufacturing techniques used in Avon's successful sporty Viper range have been adapted and applied to the Cobra series. WCTA - Wide Custom Tread Arc - is Avon's new tire profile that gives Cobra a nimble characteristic once reserved only for agile race-bred bikes, all without disrupting all-important stability. A-VBD - Advanced-Variable Density Belt - improves handling in the much wider Cobra sizes. This construction technology utilizes a jointless belt of ultra-strong material. Above the carcass, these strands are wound closely together at the tire's centre for increased stability and wear resistance. Towards the tire's edges the fibers are then progressively spaced out to allow the tire to take on a multi-compound effect as the tire leans. An aggressive tread pattern features FFG - Force Following Grooves - to follow the exact direction of forces that are transferred through the tire. These channels in the tire's surface significantly reduce irregular and advanced wear on bikes that carry heavy loads. Each Cobra rear tire also features the distinctive snake's head logo on the sidewall. Available in a wide range of sizes, incorporating fitments for Harley Davidson's V-Rod, Triumph's Rocket III, Honda's Goldwing and Valkyrie plus some sizes for custom bike applications. In the early 1960s Carroll Shelby, a Texas chicken farmer turned champion race driver, had the audacity to think he could start his own car manufacturing company. To further emphasize the gargantuan proportions of his vision, Shelby decided his company would manufacture nothing but ultra-high-performance sports cars, beginning with the landmark Cobra, introduced in 1962. To the amazement of everyone except Ol’ Shel’ himself, Shelby Automobiles succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest expectations, building cars that would provide the benchmarks for performance (benchmarks that stand to this day) and winning world championships in the process. Shelby Cobra Fifty Years is a complete history of Shelby’s Cobra sports cars. Beginning with a prologue about the events that led up to Shelby’s decision to build a high-performance sports car, the main portion of the book tells the history of the production Cobra street cars and race cars, ending with an epilogue about the continuation cars.

should i buy this CB radio?
Cobra 19 Ultra III Citizen Band Radio. its a 4 watt radio for 34 bucks from walmart, it has mixed reviews but most are encouraging. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4642484
If as someone said, you understand CB radio is different than FRS (you do get more range, but you do get more noise and will get interference due to skip) it's a good beginner radio.
Used many of the Cobra CB radio line. Usually a radio like this for $34 will do it's universal job of getting you on the air and talking. However there is no way to cut some of the interference down except for the squelch (the one reviewer that rated it bad, must of thought it was like a FRS radio, which it's not)
remember you will need a outside antenna to get better range (more money) but normally this is a true 2-3 mile radius radio (unlike FRS that claims 2 but can't get more than 1 at most in my testing)
IF you've never had a CB radio, read this first before buying
