how do i get my netgear WGR614v9 wireless router to work properly?
a couple months back, my router stopped working with my laptop, saying something about incorrect settings. since i also have a desktop computer, i really didn't worry about it. BUT now i know my laptop can connect to XBOX live, so im in a rush (black ops is out tomorrow!!!!) Well i poked around and eventually i found out how to reset the device so i did, then i ran it through the same exact installation process that i ran it through back in April when i got my laptop. I connected my laptop to a broadband connection and then ran through the setup Installation CD, then i went to the basic and wireless settings to configure the router, but it told me that there was no need to complete the setup because it has a stable internet connection already. i followed the CD word for word, and this way worked like a charm before. is there any way to fix my problem, or should i just say Fuck it and go and buy a Linksys that isn't a POS?
Your description is exactly why I do not like any configuration cd or wizard. They try to imply that a simple "cook book" procedure will fix all ills. Actually they work in only a very limited set of circumstances and they offer little to no troubleshooting steps aimed at determining a problem and fixing a problem.
Actually there are two components of enabling wireless, configuration of the router and then configuration of the LAN device (lap top in your case).
According to the CD, the router is properly configured. That is nice but if you have no idea how it is configured, it is pretty hard to configure the Laptop to match.
I recommend that you use the tried and true, disciplined approach. Document what you do in writing as you will need it. Here is my approach:
1. Record the MAC addresses of the wireless network interface of each LAN device you wish to enable wireless access. The easiest way to do this is to open command prompt (start, all programs, accessories, command prompt) and at the > prompt type in "ipconfig /all" without quotes and hit enter. You will see a lot of info. Focus in on the wireless, not wired, interface. Note the 12 character physical address - which is the MAC address. (MAC address is not related to an Apple pc, all wireless interfaces, regardless of maker, has a MAC address.
2. Next, use a pc that is connected to the LAN and router via a wired link. Never use a pc with wireless link to configure a router. In command prompt, type in "ipconfig" and hit enter. Note the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway. The default gateway IP address is the address of the router. Log onto the Web Gui configurator of the router by entering the numeric ip addess in the address bar of Internet Explorer. Enter the user name and password for your router. Consult the manual for the factory default user name and password unless you have changed it. Once on the router, record the exact router name, model, make (if applicable) and version # of the router firmware.
3. Next, go to website of router maker, support section, and see if there is newer firmware for the router. If so, download the new firmware and follow exactly the directions on firmware upgrade to router.
4. After firmware upgrade and successful reboot, log back onto router and confirm that you have internet access on the pc linked to router. This establishes that the router is accessing internet and internet service is working. If this does not work, your problem with internet access must be resolved and you need to troubleshoot that.
5. Now log onto router again using web browser. Go to wireless section. Configure by selecting encryption type (recommend WPA or WPA2, WPA2 preferable), enter a very strong (at least 12 characters, mix of upper and lower characters, numbers, and nothing that identifies a word) preshare key (psk). The psk is sometimes called wireless password or wireless key or similar name. Record your psk. Go to MAC address validation; enable MAC address validation and enter the MAC addresses of the wireless interfaces of each LAN device you wish to permit access in the MAC address validation table (you must enter these addresses). Change your SSID from the factory default to something else; do not use an SSID that is easily identified as you. Record your SSID. Save your router configuration.
6. Now go to each LAN device you wish to connect wirelessly, one at a time. Search for wireless networks, select yours from your SSID. Configure the interface for the encryption type you defined above and enter the PSK. Save configuration and you are connected. Repeat this on all LAN devices you wish to permit access.
I know it is a lot of work on the surface, but this is how you know what is going on, how to trouble shoot, and how to document and manage your wireless. Failure to do this results in failure to connect with absolutely no idea what to address.
