I just got my second radar detector. My first one was cordless, it ran on batteries. This one has a power cord that connects to the cigarette lighter and draws power from the car's battery. What I'm wondering is, when I turn off my car and go about my day, if I leave my detector plugged into the cigarette lighter does it continue to draw power from the car, thus risking a dead battery when I come back to start my car again? Should I always unplug my detector when it's not in use? The volume control on the detector, when turned all the way down, turns off the detector even if it is plugged into the car, does that make a difference? Thanks!
Some cars turn off the cigarette lighter power with the ignition. If yours does not:
Turning the volume control all the way down until it clicks off will reduce it's power consumption to zero. You could leave it like that for a year and it wouldn't flatten your battery.
But it probably wouldn't flatten the battery, anyway, if left for only a few hours. Unless a cop sets up a radar trap near where you parked, making the detector sound continuously during that time.
Most places, radar detectors are targets for thieves. I wouldn't leave it exposed in the car when you're parked, regardless.
