Detector Hard Wire
How do i hardwire an originally battery powered smoke detector? And still maintain a battery backup?
We have battery powered smoke detectors. I was hoping to hard wire an ac/dc adapter that gives it same , 9V (not sure amps), directly to the battery leads.
I would previously just remove the battery but hoping I can leave some type of battery back up in case power goes out.
Can I just put in a rechargable 9V battery into where I now already have 9V dc coming into the leads?

That doesn't sound like a very good idea to me, line powered (with battery back up) detectors are readily available and not too expensive.
Most rechargeables require the charging voltage be somewhat higher than the battery voltage, just connecting a rechargeable battery to the DC input gives the problem of either not reaching full charge, or over charging.
You could try using diodes to isolate the adapter and the battery (non-rechargeable), but due to the voltage drop of the diode, you may get a low battery warning if the power goes off, even with a good battery. Also, a cheap adapter may not provide very "clean" DC, and a battery powered smoke detector would have been designed assuming no ripple and a fairly stable voltage.

Hard wired smoke detectors?
My hard wired smoke detectors go crazy if I open windows on really humid days. Has this ever happened to anyone else. do they need to be replaced? They're 11 years old.
If your smoke alarms are of the interconnected type, it is likely that only one is operating. The operating one has a different sound from the others. If you find it, blow it out with air. Holding the vacuum cleaner against it may do the trick. Dirt is a common contributor to false alarms.
Do not replace smoke alarms every five years. This is wasteful. Replacement at 10 years is recommended, but I have some that are over 20, and still working fine. The 10 year recommendation is based partly on the premise that the smoke alarm will not be tested. Test yours often.
If you decide to replace, be sure to get the photoelectric-type, rather than ionization. They are the best for the home. Also I would not get the ones with battery backup. This is a relatively useless feature. I have found this type out of service. When the smoke alarm detects low battery, it chirps. To silence it one must turn off all power, or take the smoke alarm down. Sometimes they don't get put back up.
