Detector Masking
How can I remove masking tape residue from a smoke detector (without setting it off)?
Bearing in mind some chemicals will set it off.
Use Lighter fluid. It is what is most often used to remove the price stickers people place in books on the fly leaf page. Dab a bit onto a cloth in this case, and rub it off. Depending on how much residue is there you may have to apply more to the cloth.
Finger nail polish remover also works. So do other chemicals like these.
These mentioned chemicals are used to remove the price sticker often placed in a book because they dry and leave no stain or smell. they evaporate.
If the chemicals cause the detector to go sound, turn it off/remove battery, etc.. and then use the remover.

I've searched 'msa gas' and only found a company that makes masks and detectors, but nothing about a "msa gas"

It is likely that this vendor doesn't have a chemist on staff reviewing what the sales department puts on the website -- it becomes really obvious when I see things like "fluorine hydrogen", and carbon monoxide three times.
In all likelihood, the folks in the RKI sales office are using the term "msa gas" to describe Mine Safety Appliances' Calibration gas for multi-gas detectors.
