Detector Mount Plug
Does carbon monoxide rise or fall?(Heavier or lighter than air)What type of detector to buy??
I am looking to purchase a carbon monoxide detector for my apartment as we have several smoke detectors but no monoxide detectors I am aware of - I am expecting a child in 3 weeks.
Wondering if I should purchase a plug in alarm, or a battery operated alarm and it would help me in my decision to know if carbon monoxide is generally heavier than normal air, meaning the plug in would be better; or lighter than normal air meaning a battery operated one that can be mounted near the ceiling would be better??
or does it distribute evenly through the air?

I would go with a ceiling-mounted one. By far the most frequent culprit in carbon-monoxide poisoning is from heaters or gas water heaters (I presume you have gas heating and/or a gas water heater? - you don't need a detector if you have electric heat for both). The warm air will rise, and that convection will be what carries carbon monoxide to the ceiling to be sensed. I have never seen a CO detector for the floor, and I'm not sure that it would be a lot of use, as the air around us is constantly mixed and moving.

According to the CPSC,
"CO alarms may be installed into a plug-in receptacle or high on the wall because CO from any source will be well-mixed with the air in the house."
I use a plug-in model so I don't have to worry about batteries. the most important part of placing it is not to block it with furniture or curtains, etc.
