Detector Power Can you rewire the 12 volt power outlet in a vehicle so that it goes off when the ignition is turned off?
My vehicle is a 2008 Ford Escape. I use the outlet the plug in things like my radar detector and ipod. In my previous car, when the ignition was turned off, my outlet lost power also. In my new car, this is not the case... the power outlet remains on. Is there a way to change the wiring so that it will cut off?
Yes... it can be done. You can use a relay to do the wiring. Or you can look in the fuse box to find an open spot that may allow you to add such wiring. Look for acc. or ign. The fuse box may have these slots available. You can buy 12 volt cords and wire them up to these slots. Attach the positive wire in the fuse box and the negative can be attached to anywhere metal on the chassis frame under the dash.
That is if you know how to do this sort of wiring and you are good with a test light.
Also, if your fuse box does not have these slots available you can buy an (add a circuit) at Auto Zone in the wiring department. The best ones have a fuse attached... I use them all the time.They hook on to the hot side of any fuse and extend almost any circuit to do just what you desire.
Just make sure you attach it to a circuit that can handle the extra load. 20, 15 or 10 amp circuits can usually handle a little extra loads. Adding to a 5 amp circuit would probably overload the wiring and could cause a fire.

not work to power my radar detector, I have tried it in other cars so I know it's not the radar detector and I have tried other radar detectors in my car, I don't know why it will not power them, any ideas?
It is the transformer type that is used to convert the power. Your car is not producing a clean sine-wave and the radar detector doesn't like it so they don't work.
I have 2 laptops, one works just fine on the a/c inverter, the other will not have anything to do with it.
