Detector Straight Where do I put smoke alarms and Carbon dioxide detector in new house?
The house we bought had no smoke alarms. The directions are kind of vague. It's a typical 2 story. The front bottom is livingroom, door with hallway and then stairs, back of house familyroom behind garage, kitchen, and then dining room. Up the stairs it's front 2 bedrooms, and back straight from stairs is bathroom, bathroom and master bed room. Upstairs hall is about 20 ft. We also have a basement .
Should I ask a fireman to come out and tell me where to put them? I have 4 and 1 CM detector.
I would say give the firemen a call or just stop by the station and ask if you could schedule a time for them to come by and tell you were to put the smoke detectors. They should be in the hallway near all the bedrooms, at the top of the stairs from the basement and to the second floor, you can put it in the kitchen but make sure it is on the far side of the room so that there are less accidental activations. One CO detector should be plugged in low on the wall on every floor.
Just as aside you should sleep with your door closed because it will buy you valuable seconds should you have a fire and will also contain the fire it is in a room.

Since smoke detectors don't have their own breaker switch, to change a smoke detector, all i have to do is?
do i just pop it out and change the unit? the two smoke detectors in my house are old, so they don't have the plug thing, so do i just go straight switching the wires in the pigtail, and don't have to worry about being electrocuted?

do you know for certain they run on AC house power, or are they battery only? some older style smokes use a straight battery with a wire at each end. if so, pull the whole unit & replace. if they run on ac, there is some breaker that will kill the power. some codes require a dedicated breaker. if there is an outlet nearby, its likely that breaker will kill the juice. just be surfe power is off before pulling the old ones.
