Detector Unit
Will hard wired smoke detector work if security system is disabled?
The smoke detectors do not have a test button and I disabled the security system (unplugged unit and battery backup) cause I don't use it and the battery backup was failing, causing the security panels to chirp. Now it dawned on me that the smoke detectors might have been disabled.
Call your alarm company to see if their alarm system has anything to do with the smoke detectors. If so, they can help you out, if not you are good to go! Good luck

About Smoke Detectors
Increasing home safety is the primary objective of having a smoke alarm installed in the kitchen, halls and in the bedrooms. This vital safety device is capable of giving warnings in time to enable you to take emergency action in the event of a fire. Smoke detectors are really easy to install, non-obtrusive, inexpensive and require very little maintenance.
Smoke Alarm Types
There are three types of smoke alarms on the UK market today, one is the ionization which is the least expensive. Then there is the more expensive photoelectric or optical unit and you can also buy a combined unit.
In ionization smoke detection systems, there is a presence of a radioactive source inside the dual detection chamber. This radioactive source such as americium-241 detects smoke particulates and automatically the detector sounds its alarm.
Smoke particulates are usually products of combustion such as carbon monoxide if the combustion is incomplete and carbon dioxide if the combustion is complete. These invisible by-products of combustion cause the ionization system to respond by sensing the change in the electrical resistance across the detection chamber. When a sufficient amount of combustibles fills the chamber it triggers the alarm.
One advantage of using the photoelectric unit is that it is considerably sensitive to even the lightest smoke and which is invisible to the human eye.
The combined unit combines the qualities of both the Ionisation and photo electric units and is good for detecting both slow burning fires and quick flare ups.
Smoke detectors can be interconnected. The advantage of interconnecting a number of alarms is that when one smoke detection unit senses a sufficient density of particulates an alarm sets off and will cause all of the others in the series to sound.
Things to consider when looking for smoke detectors
One important function button that should be present in any detector unit is the test button. Pressing this button must generate an audible warning signal. A person with impaired hearing should also be considered in getting the right model. Given this condition, the installation of a hearing impaired smoke detector is appropriate. This special unit features a powerful strobe light to warn and alert the hearing impaired in the event of fire.
It doesn't take long for fires to catch hold and it doesn't take long to fit smoke detectors in yopur home. Think about it now, don't risk the lives of your loved ones.
