Question about security cameras in stores?
Let's say hypothetically that Sally was shoplifting some soda at a local grocery store. She slipped it into her large bag, despite the round dome overhead (security cam).
Is there a worker in some room watching screens of all the cameras' live footage? Because then I'd suspect they'd see the shady behavior and alert someone to talk to this person/arrest them.
Or do they record the footage onto tapes viewed later if there are suspicions? Like say some kid grabbed a pack of cigarettes from behind the counter and took off. Would the recorded film be used to try to identify the kid?
I'm not planning on shoplifting, lol. I'm just wondering what exactly is the good of these cameras?
Also, I'm aware that at very important places there are guards watching live footage. I'm talking about your average grocery store or Target. 10 points!
Most generally, stores like target and other big chain store have a loss prevention person on site and they do monitor the cameras. If there is suspicious behavior going on they will follow the person(s) with the camera and record what they witness. Smaller companies might have the cameras just recording and nobody sitting there watching all the time. Keeping recordings of all the cameras takes a lot of storage space (i.e. DVD, Hard drive) so the smaller store might have a couple of cameras that actually work and others that are dummy cameras to discourage people from stealing. Owners can and will review the recordings if they find items missing to identify the suspect. They will turn this over to law enforcement and then prosecute.
