The Rollout Of Average Speed Cameras
Government approval has been given for the latest version of “average speed cameras” to be rolled out countrywide.
The spread of roadside speed cameras is following the market progress of digital cameras in general, first everyone wanted a digital camera followed on very shortly afterwards by everyone’s desire for a digital video camera.
The latest roadside models are called the “SPECS3” model and are likely to be seen firstly in the new 20mph restricted urban areas such as Portsmouth and Oxford, with York Norwich and at least 8 London boroughs following suit.
The company behind the SPECS3 cameras are Speed Check Services who operate from their base in Frimley, Surrey. The company first started in business in the early 1990’s developing the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system which was granted Home Office approval and, according to the company, remain the sole provider of average speed recording systems to the Police and UK highway authorities, their first model receiving approval in 1999.
These new cameras are reported to be able to operate wirelessly in distances ranging from 250 yards to 15 miles. Any motorist muttering curses about speed camera proliferation might like to know that as a result of positioning these new cameras there are usually less speeding tickets issued which is said to prove that drivers do drive in a more calm and careful manner in their presence.
At present there is quite an openness about the positioning of these new cameras, a visit to their “current installations” webpage will give exact details of which roads and motorways are to be targeted.
When sited in roadwork areas the whole length of the works site can be covered. Warning signs that these cameras are operating greatly reduces the stop-start braking normally seen in the Gatso fixed camera areas, giving a more regular traffic flow, in such situations there would usually be repeater cameras every 2000 yards.
Figures available show one of the appeals of roadside speed cameras to local authorities is the £1billion going into government coffers in the last decade. One temporary camera at a road works on the M1 has raised more than £800,000 in fines in 10 months while at the same time halving the number of fatalities in the area.
Perhaps the real clinching information should come from statistics which show that these average speed cameras result in 99.4% of motorists driving within the set speed limit and on average fatalities and injuries fall by nearly 2/3rds.
